monomania (from Greek monos, one, and mania, mania) is a type of paranoia in which the patient has only one idea or type of ideas. Emotional monomania is that in which the patient is obsessed with only one emotion or several related to it; intellectual monomania is that which is related to only one kind of delirious idea or ideas.

- "The Oval Portrait" (about a painter who is obsessed with painting his wife)
- "Berenice" (about a madman who wants to marry his sick cousin only for her beautiful teeth)
- "The Masque of the Red Death" (a prince fears a terrible disease but finally gets ill from the red death and dies)
- "The Tell-Tale Heart" (a madman is obsessed with an elderly man's eye)
- "The Fall of the House of Usher" (The main character Usher is obsessed with death itself)
social manias are mass movements which periodically sweep through society, sometimes on a world wide basis. They are characterized by an outpouring of enthusiasm, mass involvement and millennialist goals. Social manias are contagious social epidemics. As social phenomena the must be differentiated from mania in individuals, the general state of frenzy, which is a defined psychiatric disease. All the above treatments are gain by function.
Trichotillomania (TTM, also known as "Trichotillosis"[1]), or "trich" as it is commonly known, is an impulse control disorder characterized by the repeated urge to pull out scalp hair, eyelashes, facial hair, nose hair, pubic hair, eyebrows or other body hair, sometimes resulting in noticeable bald patches.[2]:645 Trichotillomania is classified in the DSM-IV as an impulse control disorder, but there are still questions about how it should be classified. It may seem, at times, to resemble a habit, an addiction, a tic disorder or an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Trichotillomania often begins during the individual's teenage years. Depression or stress can trigger the trich. Due to social implications the disorder is often unreported and it is difficult to predict accurately prevalence of trichotillomania; 2.5 million in the U.S. may have TTM, with a 1% prevalence rate.[3]
The name derives from Greek: tricho- (hair), till(en) (to pull), and mania.
Cyclothymia (pronounced /ˌsaɪklɵˈθaɪmiə, ˌsɪklɵ-/) is a mood disorder and a form of bipolar disorder. It is defined in the bipolar spectrum. Specifically, this disorder is a milder form of bipolar II disorder consisting of recurrent mood disturbances between hypomania and dysthymic mood. A single episode of hypomania is sufficient to diagnose cyclothymic disorder; however, most individuals also have dysthymic periods. The diagnosis of cyclothymic disorder is never made when there is a history of mania or major depressive episode or mixed episode. The lifetime prevalence of cyclothymic disorder is 0.4-1%. The rate appears equal in men or women, though women more often seek treatment.
